Immunization Nurse Consultant (Contract)

Location: Northern Ontario

Duration: 1-2 Weeks

Hourly Rate: $43/hour plus all expenses

 

A leading Ontario healthcare system requires an RPN to provide critical immunization services to remote and Indigenous communities in Northern Ontario. This project starts the first week in February 2021 and will be week to week assignments. If you are interested please email us ASAP so we can add you to our roster

 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Administer vaccines for remote and Indigenous communities;
  • Reviews information records to determine immunization status and document information;
  • Administers vaccines and other serum by intramuscular, intracutaneous or subcutaneous injection;
  • Manages anaphylaxis;
  • Provides immediate care/action in emergency situations such as anaphylaxis. Assesses adverse events following vaccinations/medication administration and follows up with clients and health care providers;
  • Maintains records/documentation;
  • Investigates vaccine storage and handling incidents using relevant protocols, guidelines, vaccine stability information, policies, procedures and cold chain information systems;
  • Collects, assesses and interprets immunization records to ensure compliance with the Immunization of School Pupils Act, Ontario Public Health Standards and other relevant legislation. Initiates action and completes follow up. Participates in school aged immunization clinics;
  • Prepares immunization forms, suspension letters etc., to parents/guardians and school principals;
  • Inspects physicians' offices (i.e. the fridges in premises storing publicly funded vaccines) to ensure proper storage and handling of vaccines. Provides teaching and support to physician's staff;
  • Attends working group meetings to plan public health immunization programs in schools and communities;
  • Maintains statistical information;

 

Competencies and Requirements:          

  • Current registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Diploma graduate of a recognized college or school of nursing or equivalent (i.e. certificate RPN with added courses in medication administration).
  • Experience providing intramuscular and subcutaneous injections and/or vaccines to clients of all ages including infants, toddlers, children, youth, adults and seniors.
  • Experience in conducting client assessment, health teaching to individuals or groups and counselling.
  • Current CPR certificate
  • Basic knowledge of immunology and vaccinology.
  • Ability to apply nursing practice in a community setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, community partners and other health professionals.
  • Willingness and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational skills and accurate record keeping ability.
  • Ability to use computer-based information systems.

 

Ability to work flexible hours - overtime, shift work including evenings and weekends may be required.
